Expressive Movement Workshop - SYDNEY

Expressive Movement Workshop - SYDNEY

Too often our physical practices lead us away from genuine freedom while purporting to take us toward it. We learn to move in a predetermined way that is considered ‘good’, ‘right’ or ‘beautiful’ by our teacher, our community or our culture. And indeed we can develop impressive physical skills through such an orientation. But we often do so while failing to ever truly express ourselves. We never just let go. We look free while feeling trapped.

The purpose of this workshop is to guide you toward the expression of your ‘self’ rather than the expression of some ‘other’. The material and perspectives shared will help you move with exuberance, rhythm and fluidity while relinquishing the inhibitive narratives that keep you from being yourself.

If you come along, you will feel like you’re doing a kind of mix between tribal dance and contact improvisation. And you’ll feel like you’re good at it!

The event will be led by the founder of Praksis, Thomas Emerson, whose work draws on many years of study under Ido Portal, Simon Thakur and others with the goal of helping everyday people conquer their fears and learn to become more unabashedly themselves through movement practice.

Date & Time: Saturday 8 October 2022 1pm to 6pm (inc. 60-min lunch break)
Teacher: Thomas Emerson
Venue: Jungle Brothers Strength & Movement (15 Underwood Ave, Botany)
Price: $200pp

Do I need to be a good mover already?

No prior experience of any kind is required whatsoever. This workshop is for everyday people who want to be able to express themselves more freely, regardless of current levels of strength, flexibility or fitness. It will also provide tools for more experienced movement practitioners to allow themselves to let go and truly improvise.

Why should I come?

Anyone who feels inhibited in their physical expression — who wishes they could dance without feeling embarrassed – will love this workshop. That description may apply to people with very little experience in physical practice or, at the other extreme, perfectionists with high levels of experience. We should all feel free to play, to dance and to enjoy our embodiment, regardless of how skilled or experienced we may be.

What will be covered?

  • Tools for developing the capacity to segmentally articulate the entire spine from head to tail, creating space for expression and also freedom from pain, discomfort and injury.
  • How to work with partners and more open movement scenarios to remap, reconnect with, and release unnecessary tension from our bodies.
  • Basic exercises to find more rhythmicality in our movement.
  • Drills to help regain elasticity in all of our tissues — from the tips of the fingers to the soles of the feet — in order to move with more youthful springiness, athleticism and power.
  • Concepts to apply during improvisation to create truly novel movements and achieve a state of flow.
