You might have seen an article that went viral online recently highlighting some pretty concerning facts on the safety of women’s period care.

A recent study conducted by Columbia University and Michigan State University uncovered toxic metals—including lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium—in a range of tampon brands.

As you can imagine this has raised significant concerns about the safety of conventional menstrual products and highlighted the urgent need for better regulation and transparency in the period care industry here in Australia.

Currently, the regulation of menstrual products in Australia is inconsistent, with some products like tampons being regulated by the TGA, while others, such as menstrual pads, fall under general consumer protection laws with no mandatory safety testing. Concerned? So are we…

Thankfully women like public health advocate and the founder of Inoya, Helena Uhm is advocating for stricter standards and mandatory ingredient disclosure for all menstrual products sold in Australia.

As a woman and a mother, I’m deeply concerned about the toxic metals found in conventional tampons. This study underscores the importance of what we’re doing at Inoya—providing women with safer, toxin-free alternatives,” says Helena Uhm. “Inoya was founded to address exactly these kinds of issues, offering products that are rigorously tested for safety and made with the highest standards in mind. Women deserve to know what they’re putting into their bodies, and that’s why we’re committed to transparency and quality.’

Inoya is on a mission to ensure that every woman has access to safe, transparent, and eco-friendly menstrual products, born out of a desire to create menstrual products that are safe for both women and the planet. Helena's journey began with her personal struggle with skin irritation caused by conventional menstrual products, which led her to create the brand—a venture dedicated to transparency, quality, and sustainability.

The 100% toxin free range includes a Period Cup, Organic Cotton Reusable Pads, Sterilising Cup and Starter Bundles with full ingredient disclosure so women can make informed decisions about the products they use.

What we also love? Inoya’s reusable pads are crafted from organic cotton and are ethically produced through partnerships with social enterprises that support disadvantaged women.
