The salon movement you need to know about that’s supporting confidence through cancer

This August, the beauty, grooming and styling industries are coming together for a cause with the return of Style For Cancer, a national fundraising and education initiative by Look Good Feel Better Australia.

Now in its second year, Style For Cancer is a powerful movement uniting salons, stylists, barbers, and beauty professionals across the country to raise vital funds for Look Good Feel Better’s free cancer support programs, while also empowering style pros to better support clients going through treatment.

Here’s how it works:

• Style Makers (aka beauty industry professionals) register with a tax-deductible donation of $89 and get access to compassionate care training, salon promo kits, and a listing in the national Style Maker directory—a go-to resource for cancer patients seeking supportive services.
• Style Seekers (anyone undergoing or recovering from treatment) can then search the directory to find salons and professionals who understand the emotional and physical impact of cancer, and know how to show up with empathy and care.

Throughout August, Style Makers are hosting fundraising events in their salons so if you see a salon with a ‘Style for Cancer’ plaque you know they’re getting behind this important cause!

The initiative is a response to a very real need given that 1 in 2 Australians will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. For many, the confidence to book a simple haircut, facial or mani during treatment can feel overwhelming or intimidating – which is why Style For Cancer’s work is so important.  

“During treatment, particularly chemo, I didn’t have the confidence to book in any services” says Jodie Strong, a Style Seeker who participated in Look Good Feel Better.  “After my active treatments were complete, while most service providers were sensitive and careful in the way they approached me and their language with me, I was usually the one to share what worked and didn’t work for me in my recovery rather than the salon or styling professional. An important part of recovery from cancer is your feelings of self-worth and being able to take care of your body both mentally and physically.

Style For Cancer is an important initiative to bring awareness and some education to the physical side of recovery and help patients both during and post-treatment access services to help them feel more comfortable in their recovery.”

So how can you get involved? There are several ways you can get behind this important initiative:

• Encourage your salon to register for this important cause for a tax-deductible donation of $89 which includes a directory listing on Style for Cancer’s online directory.
• Make a donation here- every $100 raised funds a free Look Good Feel Better program for someone in need.
• If you’re a you're a hairdresser, barber, nail tech or makeup artist register as a Style Maker to use your craft to create genuine change.

The more Style Makers who get involved, the more people can access the support they need to face cancer with confidence. Every donation, every salon that joins, and every conversation sparked helps build a more compassionate community that understands just how powerful it can be to help someone feel good when they need it most.
