Sydney just became the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major and here’s what that means

Well Sydney, we’ve done it! Our glorious, beautiful city has just taken its well-deserved place on the world stage.

The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS has officially joined the ranks of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM), meaning Sydney is the seventh city to be inducted into this elite series alongside other iconic marathon hosts, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, London, and Tokyo. Sydney’s first year as a Major will be taking place on Sunday, 31st August 2025.
 
The Abbott World Marathon Majors represents the pinnacle of marathon races worldwide. Launched in 2006, the series celebrates the endurance and dedication of marathoners and has become a bucket-list achievement for runners globally.
 
By gaining this recognition, Sydney will now attract a greater number of elite and amateur runners from around the world, eager to complete the full set of World Marathon Majors. Sydney’s bid to become part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors was a lengthy and intricate process. This journey, spanning over multiple years, involved meeting stringent criteria that included runner safety, race quality and course logistics.
 
The city’s bid process saw a close partnership between the marathon organizers, government bodies, and local supporters, all working tirelessly to showcase Sydney's readiness and capability to deliver a top-tier event that could meet the high standards of the Abbott series with this year’s marathon participation hitting 25,000.
