If you spend any amount of time at the beach, chances are you’ve already formed a strong opinion on the great towel versus cabana debate. Are you a towel-only minimalist? Or a full cabana operator with pegs, shade walls and a carefully mapped patch of sand? And at what point does claiming beach real estate cross the line from practical to deeply un-Australian? The great beach cabana debate has been everywhere this summer, tapping into our collective obsession with beach etiquette, personal space, and the unspoken rules of Aussie sand culture. But while the towel-versus-cabana debate is entertaining, it’s also pointing to something so much more important- how Australians actually cope with long days in the sun. Rather than weighing in online, Australian hydration brand LVL UP decided to take the conversation back to where it belongs- the beach. This morning the brand lined Noosa Main Beach with hundreds of branded cabanas, available free to the public on a first-in, best-dressed basis. The result? A very real, very visible version of the internet argument playing out on the sand, just minus the comment section. It was playful and unmistakably Australian, but it also highlighted a much bigger issue: sun, shade, and dehydration. While the cabana debate rages on, the reality is that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and many of us still underestimate the impact of prolonged sun exposure and dehydration. LVL UP was founded by Melbourne entrepreneurs Madison Verrocchi and Austin Xenos after data revealed that four in five people experience symptoms of dehydration daily, particularly during long, active summer days. Add intense UV exposure into the mix, and the towel-versus-cabana argument suddenly looks less about etiquette and more about protection. Throughout this morning, LVL UP also handed out complimentary hydration samples and gift bags to beachgoers, highlighting that enjoying the beach and looking after your body should go hand in hand. Whether you’re firmly team towel or unapologetically pro-cabana, the takeaway is simple: staying shaded, sun safe and hydrated matters far more than how much sand you’ve claimed.
