In the ever-evolving landscape of health and wellness, there’s a practice that has stood the test of time—Colonic Hydrotherapy. As research continues to explore the critical role of the gut microbiome in immunity, mental health, and overall wellbeing, practices like colonics are gaining recognition as essential tools in achieving optimal health.
As someone deeply passionate about gut health and its profound impact on overall wellbeing, I’m excited to shed light on this ancient practice and its modern applications.
Colonic Hydrotherapy was such a pivotal treatment modality in my recovery from severe gut/skin issues, I was amazed that no one had told me about it earlier. Not only did it help rid my body of toxicity, it allowed me to deal with a lot of stored emotion in my gut that was clearly contributing to my illness. Coming from someone who had tried everything, mainstream and alternative I know the world of difference that Colonics can have on overall health and happiness.
A Brief History of Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonic Hydrotherapy, also known as Colonics or Colonic Irrigation, dates back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians were among the first to recognise the connection between gut health and overall vitality, using enemas as part of their cleansing rituals. It was utilised by Egyptian Royalty as a way to preserve their physical body and maintain purity in hope that they would continue as royalty into the afterlife. This practice spread to Ancient Greece and Rome, where it was embraced as a cornerstone of maintaining physical and mental balance. Fast forward to modern times, colonic hydrotherapy has evolved into a refined practice supported by state-of-the-art equipment and technology and tailored approaches to meet individual needs.
The Benefits of Colonic Hydrotherapy
At its core, colonic hydrotherapy involves the gentle infusion of warm, filtered water into the colon to cleanse it of waste, toxins, and build-up. While there is no current scientific research to validate its effectiveness, there is significant anecdotal evidence from countless individuals who have experienced its life-changing effects firsthand.
Many clients report benefits such as:
1. Improved Digestion: Colonics can support regular bowel movements and alleviate bloating, constipation, and sluggish digestion.
2. Detoxification: By clearing out waste, colonics may reduce the toxic load on the liver and other detox organs.
3. Enhanced Energy Levels: A clean, optimally functioning gut is often associated with improved energy and mental clarity.
4. Better Nutrient Absorption: Clearing out impacted waste ensures the gut can effectively absorb vitamins and minerals from your food and supplements.
5. Skin Health: Many clients report clearer, more radiant skin after colonics, highlighting the gut-skin connection.
6. Gut-Brain Connection: Over 80% of serotonin—the “happy hormone”—is produced in the gut. Serotonin plays a critical role in mood regulation, sleep, and overall happiness. Supporting gut health can profoundly impact mental wellbeing.
When to Consider Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonics can be beneficial for almost anyone, and they are often associated just with addressing symptoms like persistent bloating, gas, or constipation but they are also incredibly useful for these situations:
• Preparing for or recovering from detox programs or fasting
• Support for weight management goals
• Chronic fatigue, brain fog or lacking mental acuity
• Skin issues such as acne, eczema, or psoriasis
• Before significant life changes, like pregnancy
• Pre or post operation
Addressing Concerns About Good Bacteria
A common question we get a lot at pH Clinic is whether Colonics ‘wash out’ good bacteria. To clarify, if you imagine your gut as a garden, it’s an ecosystem with many different elements that need to be balanced for the environment to thrive. Colonics are like weeding your garden, if you don’t address the weeds—such as harmful yeasts, parasites, or mucoid plaque—your garden can become overgrown, stifling the growth of healthy, beneficial bacteria. Colonics do not wash away your good bacteria, it is a gentle introduction of water, we are not high pressure hosing your insides. We also do not force the body to eliminate, it is gently encouraged with abdominal massage and easing the nervous into a state of parasympathetic state.
By clearing out the overgrowth, colonics provide the ideal environment for your microbiome to thrive. Maintaining a healthy colon is pivotal for anyone striving for optimal health and happiness.
The Different Systems Available
There are two primary types of systems used in colonic hydrotherapy: open systems and closed systems.
1. Open Systems: These involve a self-guided process where the client is in control, supported by a therapist as needed. This method provides privacy and is ideal for those who prefer a hands-off approach.
2. Closed Systems: Here, a therapist works closely with the client, discussing health goals, history and utilising abdominal massage to encourage elimination with releases. Your practitioner manually controls water flow, ensuring comfort throughout the session. Closed systems are excellent for personalised guidance and care.
At pH Clinic, we use advanced closed-system equipment from Germany, prioritising safety, comfort, and efficacy. All of our practitioners are thoroughly trained and are able to guide you through the process and answer any questions you may have along the way.
What to Expect During a Colonic
For those new to the experience, colonic hydrotherapy may sound daunting. However, most clients describe the process as gentle and much better than they expected.
Prior to your appointment you are sent a consultation form so your practitioner can gain some insight of your health history and motivation for getting colonics. This also helps them screen for any contra-indications or things that may support them in personalising your session. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your therapist and they will describe the set up and what you need to do so your session can commence. During the session, a small sterile tube is inserted into the rectum, warm, filtered water is them introduced into the colon. The therapist gently massages the abdomen to assist in the release of waste, toxins, and gas. The session typically lasts 30-45 minutes, leaving you feeling lighter, refreshed, and revitalised.
A Self-Care Investment
Colonic hydrotherapy is more than just a cleanse—it’s a gateway to understanding and nurturing your gut health. While scientific research into the practice is yet to be commissioned, the overwhelming anecdotal evidence speaks volumes about its potential.
