For many people, the idea of creating a lower-tox home can feel overwhelming.
Social media is full of advice telling us to throw everything out, replace every plastic container and completely overhaul our kitchens, bathrooms and laundries overnight.
The reality is, that's simply not realistic for most households.
The easiest approach is to make small, practical changes as products need replacing, rather than trying to overhaul your home all at once. Every swap you make is one less source of unnecessary chemicals in your home, and those changes can quickly add up.
With many Australians already using the change of season as an excuse to declutter and refresh their homes ahead of spring, now is a great time to start introducing a few healthier swaps.
Start with the products you use every day
One of the easiest places to begin is by looking at the products you handle and use most often, so perhaps think about your kitchen, laundry and cleaning cupboard. These are products that come into contact with your skin, your food, your clothes and the air inside your home every single day.
Rather than replacing everything at once, simply make a better choice when it's time to buy something new.
That might mean choosing a wooden chopping board instead of plastic, swapping plastic food containers for glass, or replacing an old non-stick frying pan with stainless steel or cast iron when it eventually reaches the end of its life.
Don't be fooled by "natural" marketing
One of the biggest misconceptions is that products labelled "natural", "eco" or "green" are automatically free from ingredients that many people prefer to avoid. Unfortunately, that's not always the case as many cleaning and laundry products still contain synthetic fragrance, even when they're marketed as environmentally friendly.
Instead of relying on the front of the label, turn the bottle around and read the ingredients. As a general rule, fragrance-free products with full ingredient disclosure and simple formulations are often a better place to start. Products labelled as suitable for “sensitive skin” will generally be free of synthetic fragrance so often this is a quick and easy way to ensure you’re using something with less toxins.
There are a few easy wins
Some of the simplest swaps include:
- Glass food storage instead of plastic (Kmart, IKEA and Target have some good buys)
- Stainless steel lunch boxes or drink bottles for kids
- Wooden chopping boards
- Stainless steel, cast iron or ceramic-coated cookware
- Stainless steel, wood or surgical grade silicone cooking utensils
- Fragrance-free laundry and cleaning products
- Beeswax wraps or plastic-free cling wrap (our favourite is Zero wrap because it actually sticks to things properly and isn’t a nightmare to cut)
- Soy or beeswax candles scented naturally with essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance
- Post flush drops instead of aerosol toilet spray (these No.2 drops are tried and tested and 100% work for even the slinkiest number two’s- pun 100% intended)
None of these changes need to happen overnight. If you need a little inspiration for more non-toxic products for your home our friends over at the Clean and Conscious Awards have just shared a number of discounts on 2026 award finalist products which you can

Progress is better than perfection
Perhaps the biggest mistake people make is believing they need to create the "perfect" low-tox home. In reality, the most sustainable - and financially friendly - approach is simply choosing one or two changes each month. You’ll also be surprised that low-tox isn’t always necessarily more expensive either and often products will last longer.
What about skincare and beauty?
Household products are only one piece of the puzzle and the personal care products we apply to our skin every day can also contribute to our overall chemical exposure. If you'd like to learn more, you can find
