In Australia, nine people die every day from suicide — and seven of them are men. Mongrels Men is the not for profit that’s on a mission to turn this statistic around. If you haven't already seen a Mongrels Men flying a flag sign at your local beach you probably will soon. Founded by Tim Hewson who was recently named a Westfield Local Hero finalist, the community-based charity has goal to improve the physical and mental health of men across the country through sports, fitness, exercise and community. Work, family commitments and stress all add up, and with one in three men between the ages of 30-65 reportedly having no social connections, the organisation works to help men connect with other men to boost their mental health. Guys can get involved by starting their day off with a community sunrise run, walk, swim or surf paired with a coffee and chat, a free Pilates or yoga sesh, a game of soccer or basketball or a longer group hike. With events currently around Sydney suburbs, Nelson Bay, Kingscliff, Noosa, Gold Coast and Brisbane the aim is to grow to have Mongrel communities around the country where men can come together, share in a safe space and take some time out of their day or week to check in with each other and tend to their emotional, mental and physical health. 'In just 2 short years, @mongrelsmen has grown from a few blokes running up and down Dee Why beach to become a registered charity, supported by a network of 15 awesome volunteers running ~700 events annually across 11 NSW and QLD locations for a community of more than 2,500 Mongrels. Our aim is to have a Community Champion running events in every postcode in Australia so that blokes have somewhere to go, something to do, someone to talk to and support when needed.' - Tim Hewson Check out the calendar of meet-ups and events to get involved with the community and tend to your wellbeing, or donate to help the group impact the lives of even more men around the country. ___ Image & Content Source
