There is no doubt that the likes of Vitruvian has made waves in the fitness industry over the past few years. High tech, engaging and innovative, these devices are intelligent and they keep people coming back for more. However a new study has now found that training with digital weight may be more effective than conventional weight when it comes to improving performance.

A 6-week double-blind randomised controlled trial was conducted with collegiate basketball players using the Vitruvian Trainer+. A very sleek, all-in-one digital home gym designed and founded right here in Australia All 32 participants successfully completed the 6-week training program with no missed sessions.

All the participants in the study used the Vitruvian Trainer+. One group has an eccentric-based program to follow, the other followed general programming that you can do with any other weight. Both saw improvements, but the group who followed the eccentric-biased program showed a significantly greater increase compared to the other group. They also showed better results in their jump height and peak power. This is believed to be due to the trainers ability to provide players with effective eccentric training exercises. The study was published in the Scientific Journal of Sport and Performance.

Exercise enthusiasts and athletes often focus on the concentric phase of movements, where muscles contract and shorten to lift weights or perform tasks. However, an often overlooked but equally vital component of strength training is the eccentric phase, where muscles lengthen under tension. Eccentric exercise movements are crucial for building strength, preventing injury, and enhancing overall athletic performance. New digital weights equipment, like the Vitruvian Trainer+, lets you train eccentrically by choosing 'Eccentric Only' mode for weight-loading only on the lowering phase or 'Time under Tension' mode to overload in the lowering phase and keep your muscles engaged in the lifting phase.

One of the primary reasons eccentric exercise movements are so important is their role in muscle hypertrophy and strength development. Studies have shown that eccentric contractions can produce greater muscle force compared to concentric contractions alone. This increased force production can lead to greater muscle damage, which in turn stimulates muscle growth and strength gains.
Incorporating eccentric exercises into your workout routine can target muscle fibres that may not be adequately engaged during concentric exercises alone. This balanced approach ensures that you're effectively challenging your muscles throughout their full range of motion, promoting balanced muscle development and functional strength.

Eccentric training is also a valuable tool for injury prevention and rehabilitation. When muscles are eccentrically trained, they become better equipped to handle the stresses and forces placed upon them during various activities. Stronger eccentrically-trained muscles are less prone to injury, as they can better absorb and dissipate forces, reducing the risk of strains, tears, and overuse injuries.

Furthermore, eccentric exercises can play a vital role in the rehabilitation process for individuals recovering from injuries. They can help rebuild muscle strength and improve joint stability while minimizing the risk of re-injury.

Eccentric exercises also offer benefits beyond the gym or sports field. They play a crucial role in improving functional fitness and everyday mobility. As we age, maintaining strength and mobility becomes increasingly important for maintaining independence and a high quality of life. Eccentric training helps preserve muscle function, balance, and joint stability, making daily activities more manageable and reducing the risk of falls and injuries among older adults.

With all these reasons as to why eccentric exercises are so important, it makes sense to embrace technology that can provide these important type of exercises.
