When Jon Gregory launched Vitruvian, an Australian connected fitness/digital weight training device, at the end of 2020, he changed the game of fitness forever. Powered by genius innovations and backed by impressive AI, the digital weights machine allowed users to carry out their strength training using one centralised platform for the first time ever.

The Vitruvian has since become an international hit, counting the likes of Bear Grylls and the Liver King as fans, along with some of the world’s best sporting teams, such as Orlando Magic, the Chicago Bears and the Red Sox.

Jon, who is an applied physicist, high frequency trader and father of three, first had the idea for the Vitruvian after identifying an issue with the traditional weights he was using. While working from home, he tried to balance work life with a regular fitness routine, but he found the traditional weights too cumbersome. Not only did they take up a lot of space, he also needed a lot of them to maintain an effective workout routine, as you need to constantly change weights to keep your body guessing and achieving results.

A natural innovator, he soon came up with an idea to train smarter. After 10 years of research, Jon created the perfect blend of AI and tech, resulting in the world’s first personal trainer, spotter, and fitness equipment in one. Thanks to backing from investors, who knew Jon was on to a good thing, the Vitruvian soon came to life with an elite team of engineers, scientists, and physicists.

So, how does the Vitruvian work?
The Vitruvian is a slim, carbon fibre platform, powered by small-but-mighty motors. Its weight is controlled via two retractable cables and guided by an adaptive algorithm. It responds to and learns from your movement patterns to give you the most comprehensive workout advice, and automatically adjusts the amount of resistance (or weight) you lift based on how you are performing and the information you provide the app. It’s a virtual PT, and the app is loaded with more than 200 exercises and classes developed by elite fitness coaches from around the world.

As a bonus, it can easily slide under your bed or couch for storage, and if you don’t have a Vitruvian at home, you can access one via Xtend Barre in Mosman.

What features does it offer?

Not only does the machine track your performance, it also allows you to select goal-oriented programs. You’ll never plateau with the Vitruvian, either, as it comes with a bunch of handy attachments (such as handles, bars, ropes, angle straps and more), which allow you to challenge yourself with every workout.

Another point of difference with the Vitruvian is that it allows you to work on the eccentric phase of a movement (something usually done with a spotter), allowing you to lower as heavy a weight as possible. It also allows you to move concentrically, which means just 15 to 20 minutes is enough for an efficient and effective workout.

Once you try it, you’ll never go back to free weights again.
