How Lymphatic Massage Can Boost Energy, Detox, and Well-being

You might have noticed over the past year that lymphatic massage has moved firmly into the wellness spotlight. From Brazilian-inspired body treatments to at-home tools and buccal facials, lymphatic health has become one of the biggest movements in modern beauty and self-care.

Once reserved only for clinical or post-surgical care, lymphatic massage is becoming a staple in wellness studios and massage spaces, celebrated for its ability to support circulation, detoxification, and overall vitality.

To explore why this ancient yet science-backed practice is having such a moment - and how it can support everything from detoxification and hormonal balance to emotional wellbeing-  we sat down with Thaisy Bonilha, certified massage therapist at leading skin and beauty clinic SSKIN, who’s spent more than a decade helping clients restore balance and flow through the power of lymphatic massage.

Q. Why is the health of our lymphatic system extremely important when it comes to our overall health and well-being?
The lymphatic system is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the most essential systems in the body. It plays a vital role in removing toxins, biochemical waste, excess fluids and even emotional stagnation. Incredibly, researchers recently discovered that we even have a lymphatic system in the brain, called the glymphatic system, which helps clear neurological waste during sleep.

When this system isn’t functioning properly, we can experience fatigue, swelling, brain fog, skin issues, and low immunity. A healthy lymphatic flow supports detoxification, hormonal balance, emotional regulation, and immune resilience. It’s truly the body’s internal cleansing and defence network.

Q. What’s the biggest thing you wished people knew and understood about lymphatic massage?
That it’s not just about aesthetics. Of course, the visual results are beautiful - reduced puffiness, glowing skin, a more sculpted silhouette. But what really matters is how people feel after. Lymphatic massage helps regulate the nervous system, improve digestion, boost immunity, and reconnect us to our own bodies.

It’s subtle yet deeply powerful work. I wish more people viewed it as an essential part of holistic wellbeing, not just a luxury or a trend.

Q. Why do you think lymphatic massage is on the rise now in terms of the number of clinicians offering it?
People are becoming more conscious and educated about their health, especially when it comes to the nervous system, gut health, inflammation, and emotional wellness. Lymphatic massage addresses all of these.

Social media has also played a big role in popularising Brazilian-style lymphatic massage with fast, visible results that naturally catch attention. But what keeps people coming back is how they feel: lighter, clearer, more grounded. It’s part of a larger shift toward preventative, holistic self-care.

Q. Are their different kinds of lymphatic massage and what are the key differences?
There are several lymphatic drainage techniques, each with its own style, rhythm, and therapeutic focus. Some science-based approaches include:

  • Vodder Method: A gentle, medically grounded technique characterized by precise, rhythmic movements. It’s often used in clinical settings, particularly for lymphedema care and post-operative recovery.

  • Leduc Technique: A functional, directional approach known for its effectiveness in reducing swelling, improving lymph flow, and supporting healing after surgery or trauma.

  • Godoy Method: This method combines mechanical and manual techniques to promote lymphatic flow and is commonly used in clinical and rehabilitative settings.

  • Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage: A more dynamic, results-driven approach often used for aesthetic and detoxification purposes. It incorporates abdominal massage, sliding movements, slightly increased pressure (within safe limits), and sometimes breathing or energetic techniques.
In my sessions, I integrate elements from each of these methods based on the client’s individual needs - whether medical, emotional, or aesthetic - to provide a comprehensive and personalized experience.

Q. When should someone consider getting a lymphatic massage?
Lymphatic massage is beneficial at any time, but especially when you are experiencing:
  • Bloating or water retention
  • Chronic fatigue or low energy
  • Post-surgery recovery (with medical clearance)
  • Hormonal changes (PMS, postpartum, menopause)
  • Constipation or sluggish digestion
  • Frequent colds, infections, or low immunity
  • Jet lag or travel recovery
It’s also wonderful during lifestyle transitions, detox protocols, emotional burnout, or just when you need to reset. Even if you’re feeling good, lymphatic massage helps maintain internal flow and wellbeing.

Q. Why is lymph stimulation especially important for anyone that may be experiencing health issues?
When we’re unwell - physically or emotionally - the lymphatic system can become sluggish. Inflammation, medication, stress, poor sleep, or lack of movement can all block its flow.

Think of your lymph nodes like sponges collecting old waste. If they aren’t regularly “rinsed out,” that waste can build up and disrupt many other systems in the body. Gentle stimulation of the lymph reactivates your body’s natural ability to detox, reduce swelling, and heal.

It’s especially beneficial for chronic conditions, hormonal imbalances, digestive issues, and post-viral fatigue. I’ve seen profound shifts in clients with persistent symptoms once we get the lymph flowing again.

Q. How is the lymphatic massage you offer at SSKIN different from lymphatic massage that may be offered at other clinics?
What I offer is a deeply personalised, therapeutic experience. I tailor every session based on the client’s unique body, story, and intention. Here’s how my work stands out:
  • Brazilian techniques for visible sculpting, detox, and glow;
  • Leduc method for post-surgical support and fibrosis prevention;
  • Vodder flow for nervous system regulation and subtle drainage;
  • Chinese Medicine - I incorporate acupressure points (like Kidney or Intestine points) to support digestion or energy flow;
  • Visceral & abdominal massage to release gut tension and blockages; Breathwork to regulate the vagus nerve and support emotional release; Ayurveda-inspired guidance to support digestion, cycles, or daily rhythm.
I begin each session with a deep intake, asking about physical symptoms, emotional stress, lifestyle patterns, and health history. From there, I create a unique experience that’s functional, intuitive, and healing.

Q. What role can a lymphatic massage play in post-surgery recovery?
Lymphatic massage plays a vital role in post-surgery recovery by supporting the body’s natural healing processes and reducing complications. Here’s how it helps:
  • Reduces Swelling and Inflammation - Surgery often causes fluid build-up. Lymphatic massage gently stimulates lymph flow, helping to drain excess fluid and reduce puffiness and pressure.
  • Prevents Fibrosis - If lymph fluid stagnates, it can lead to fibrosis - a dense, hard scar tissue. Early and consistent lymphatic work helps keep tissues soft and mobile.
  • Speeds Up Healing - By improving circulation and lymph flow, this technique enhances oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues, promoting faster healing.
  • Supports Skin Reconnection and Contour - Especially after liposuction or plastic surgery, lymphatic massage can help the skin adhere smoothly to underlying tissues and improve overall tone and shape.
  • Relieves Discomfort and Emotional Tension - Gentle, intentional touch can ease pain, reduce sensitivity, and calm the nervous system creating a safer, more relaxed state for recovery.
  • Customizable to Each Phase of Healing - Post-surgical lymphatic massage must be tailored based on the procedure, healing stage, and individual needs. A skilled therapist adapts techniques to ensure safe, effective results.

It’s clear why lymphatic massage is becoming a cornerstone of modern self-care, and as Thaisy explains the magic lies in the body’s natural ability to restore flow, we just have to give it the space and support to do so.

Whether you’re booking a session at SSKIN or bringing mindful movement into your daily routine, a little attention to your lymphatic system can make a big difference in how you feel.
