Why Aussies Are Ditching Their Usual Drink Order And Trying Something Completely Different

We've all got one. The drink we order without thinking. The same sauvignon blanc. The same gin and tonic. The same beer we've been ordering since our twenties. But according to new figures from Amber Beverage Australia, Australians are breaking up with their "usual" and becoming far more adventurous drinkers.

Instead of sticking to familiar favourites, more Australians are reaching for premium tequilas, Japanese whiskies, craft spirits and sophisticated alcohol-free alternatives, signalling a major shift in how we drink and why we drink.

And no, it's not just about what's trending on social media.

Experts say Australians are becoming more intentional about their choices, treating drinks less like an afterthought and more like part of the overall experience.

"Australians aren't just buying a drink anymore, they're buying into a brand and a cultural moment," says Uliana Linenko, Managing Director of Amber Beverage Australia.

"They're more curious, more considered, and more willing to trade up than ever before."

Your drink order might be saying more about you than you realise

Psychologists have long known that the choices we make can become part of our identity.

It's why some people proudly identify as a "red wine person" or refuse to order anything other than a margarita.

But as travel, food culture and social media expose Australians to more global trends than ever before, many of us are becoming increasingly willing to experiment.

One week it's a spicy margarita. The next it's Japanese whisky. The following weekend you're ordering a non-alcoholic spritz and wondering why you didn't try it sooner.

The rise of the sober-curious social life

Perhaps one of the most noticeable shifts is happening at the alcohol-free end of the bar.

Non-alcoholic spirits and cocktails continue to gain popularity as more Australians look for balance rather than complete abstinence.

Whether it's avoiding a hangover before a Pilates class, surviving an early morning kids' sport run, or simply wanting to feel better the next day, many Australians are embracing moderation without sacrificing the ritual of sharing a drink with friends.

The result? Drinks menus now routinely feature sophisticated alcohol-free options that look every bit as good as their alcoholic counterparts.

We're becoming drink explorers

The days of ordering the cheapest option on the menu may not be disappearing entirely, but Australians are increasingly willing to spend a little more on drinks that feel special.

Tequila remains one of the strongest-performing categories, while premium spirits and heritage brands continue attracting curious consumers looking to try something different.

The modern Australian drinks cabinet is starting to look a little less predictable and a lot more interesting.

And if you've recently swapped your regular order for something completely different, it turns out you're not alone.
