Why Your Hair Is Thinning and How to Restore Hair Growth Naturally

Thinning hair is one of the most common concerns both men and women bring up in my clinic, and it’s also one of the top reasons people search for answers about hair loss, hair shedding and natural hair growth solutions. Often, it’s not their main reason for booking a consultation, it is something raised as a concern when discussing issues like gut health, hormone balance, low energy, or weight gain. Yet hair thinning is one of the body’s most visible signs that something deeper is out of balance.

While many people assume their only options are hormone-disrupting medications or costly transplants, there are a number of natural ways to help restore thicker, healthier hair growth from the inside out.

Getting to the Root Cause
The first step is always to identify what’s driving the change. In my practice at Lively Shift, I find the following factors are most often at play:

  • DHT and Genetics: Pattern baldness in men and women is largely driven by a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is converted from testosterone. This hormone gradually shrinks hair follicles and contributes to hormonal hair loss and increased shedding. The earlier this is addressed, the more likely thickness can be preserved.
  • Stress: Chronic stress elevates cortisol (the body’s main stress hormone), which disrupts the hair growth cycle and contributes to inflammation. In women, cortisol also suppresses progesterone, accelerating thinning and hair loss.
  • Thyroid Function: Both underactive and overactive thyroids can alter hair growth, texture and shedding. I frequently see thyroid shifts related to autoimmune conditions (mostly underactive thyroid), iodine deficiency or low selenium levels - all of which can contribute to hair thinning and slowed regrowth.
  • Nutrition and Gut Absorption: Hair is made of keratin, a protein that requires key nutrients like iron, zinc, vitamin C and healthy fats. When digestion or nutrient absorption is compromised, the hair and skin are often the first to show signs of deficiency, resulting in hair thinning, breakage or slow growth.
  • Ageing and Stem Cell Decline: Hair follicles rely on stem cells to regenerate. Over time (and under chronic stress), these cells weaken. However, specific nutrients and growth factors can help support healthier hair growth and reactivation if caught early.
  • Scalp and Environmental Stressors: Pollutants, toxins and scalp microbiome imbalances create inflammation and impair circulation - two things your follicles rely on for strong, consistent hair growth.

How to Support Healthy Hair Growth
Once the key drivers are identified (ideally through blood work assessing hormones, nutrient levels and thyroid function), lifestyle, dietary and targeted supplement strategies can make a profound difference.

1. Lifestyle Shifts
• Prioritise stress balance through breathwork, walking or morning sunlight exposure.
• Commit to consistent, high-quality sleep, as hair grows best when cortisol is calm.
• Massage your scalp daily to stimulate blood flow. Rosemary oil is one of my favourite tools here — massaging it into the scalp and leaving it overnight before washing can significantly improve micro-circulation to the follicles.

2. Nourishing Foods
• Protein: Eggs, wild-caught fish, legumes or grass-fed beef supply the amino acids that build keratin for stronger hair.
• Minerals: Seaweed, sea salt, pumpkin seeds, poultry and Brazil nuts provide iodine, zinc and selenium for follicle strength and growth.
• Iron: Spirulina, lentils and red meat support oxygen delivery to the scalp, which is essential for hair regrowth.
• Healthy fats: Avocado, olive oil and fatty fish keep cell membranes resilient, promoting shine and reducing breakage.

3. Targeted Supplements
• Omega-3s (EPA/DHA): Reduce inflammation and support hormone balance for healthier hair growth.
• Saw Palmetto & Pumpkin Seed Oil: Shown in studies to moderate DHT activity and improve hair density in cases of hormonal hair loss.
• Biotin & Silica: Support collagen formation and strengthen the hair shaft to reduce breakage and improve texture.
• Thyroid Nutrients: Iodine and selenium (when clinically indicated) optimise thyroid-related hair growth.

Thinning hair is rarely just a cosmetic issue - it’s a signal from your body that something deeper needs attention. By addressing your unique root causes and rebalancing from within, you can often see significant improvements in hair strength, texture and regrowth, while naturally reducing ongoing hair thinning and hair loss over time.

At Lively Shift, I specialise in identifying these imbalances through personalised naturopathic and functional testing, helping you restore vitality from the inside out.
