Three weeks, a few minutes of movement a day, and one very big goal: to get Australia moving. From September 1–21, Aussies across the country are being invited to take part in Million Moves, a free 21-day movement challenge from not-for-profit peak body AUSactive that's making getting active refreshingly simple. There are no step targets to hit, kilometres to clock up or workouts you need to complete. Instead, Million Moves works on one easy equation: one minute of movement = one move. A walk around the block? It counts. Fifteen minutes of stretching? Absolutely. A Pilates class, swim, gym session, bike ride or game in the backyard with the kids? They all count too. Movement can be seated or standing, gentle or high intensity, structured exercise or simply something you enjoy doing. The idea is to choose a daily movement goal that feels achievable for you — 15, 30 or 60 minutes — and see how many moves you can accumulate across the 21 days. And there's a pretty important reason behind it. According to Million Moves, 75 per cent of Australian adults aren't meeting recommended physical activity levels, while Australia ranks 140th out of 146 countries for teenage physical activity. Rather than telling everyone they need to exercise more, the challenge is designed to help remove some of the barriers that can make movement feel difficult to fit into everyday life. By counting every minute and allowing participants to choose how they move, Million Moves is showing that being more active doesn't have to mean finding an extra hour for the gym. It's also about what can happen when those small minutes start adding up. AUSactive says even 10 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each day is associated with a 10–20 per cent reduction in all-cause mortality, while regular movement can support everything from heart health and mental wellbeing to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Perhaps one of the best parts is that you don't have to do it alone. You can create a team and get your friends, family or colleagues involved, while schools, workplaces, gyms and community groups across Australia are joining the challenge too. Last year's participants spoke about far more than fitness, sharing stories of improved mental health, discovering new activities, feeling more socially connected and simply having a reason to get moving each day. Signing up is completely free, and participants receive resources including a Move Calendar and movement guides to help with ideas along the way. Or you can forget the guide altogether and spend those minutes doing whatever kind of movement makes you feel good. Million Moves runs from September 1–21, 2026.
