Sports gels have long been a go-to for runners, cyclists and endurance athletes needing quick fuel on the move. But what happens when you strip the sports gel right back to something much simpler?

Sodii may have just given us the answer.

The Australian electrolyte brand has teamed up with Buddy and Jesinta Franklin and their Western Australian honey brand, Honey For Life, to create Raw Electrolyte Honey — a new natural carbohydrate and electrolyte gel made with just four ingredients.

At the heart of it are two things nature already does a pretty great job of: honey and minerals.

Each sachet contains 31g of Honey For Life's bioactive TA35+ Raw Western Australian Marri Honey, providing 25g of naturally occurring carbohydrates, alongside Sodii's Lake Deborah Ancient Lake Salt, potassium and magnesium.

The honey provides the carbohydrates your body can use for fuel, while the added electrolytes help support hydration, bringing two key elements of sports nutrition together in one very simple sachet.

Each serve delivers 400mg sodium, 210mg potassium and 70mg magnesium, with no maltodextrin, artificial flavours or colours, synthetic thickeners or preservatives.

It's also a pretty exciting move for Sodii.

The brand has built a loyal following around its Everyday Hydration Salts, but Raw Electrolyte Honey takes it beyond hydration and into sports fuelling for the first time. Sodii has even introduced a new “Fuel” category alongside its existing “Hydrate” range.

Buddy Franklin's involvement in the collaboration also goes much deeper than putting a famous face on the packet.

Throughout his AFL career, Buddy regularly relied on the gels, powders and sports drinks used by elite athletes. Now, as co-owner of Honey For Life alongside Jesinta, he's helped create a very different option using raw honey as the source of carbohydrate.

There is a great Australian provenance story behind it too. Honey For Life's Marri honey is raw, cold extracted and sourced from the Marri forests of Western Australia's south-west, while Sodii's salt comes from Lake Deborah, an ancient salt lake around 450 kilometres east of Perth.

So, despite being designed as a modern sports fuel, the ingredient list couldn't be much simpler.

Sodii recommends taking a sachet around 15 to 20 minutes before exercise or reaching for one during longer training sessions and events. It's designed for running, endurance sport, trail adventures and gym training, and can also be used as a natural pre-workout option when you want carbohydrates and electrolytes before a session.

The launch also comes at a fitting time for Sydney's running community, with the TCS Sydney Marathon taking over the city this weekend. While race day isn't the time to experiment with a new fuelling strategy, Raw Electrolyte Honey could be one to put through its paces during training for whatever challenge comes next.
