Sydney's gluten-free crowd has a new reason to put a long lunch in the diary, with one of Glebe's best Mexican restaurants recently extending its opening hours into the afternoon.
Nu'u by Nativo, the intimate Southern Mexican restaurant on Glebe Point Road, is now opening for lunch, giving Sydneysiders more opportunities to experience its 100% gluten-free kitchen.
Led by Oaxaca-born chef Manuel Díaz and drinks curator Diana Farrera, Nu'u is a celebration of the food and flavours of Southern Mexico, with a particular focus on Oaxacan cooking.
Díaz grew up learning traditional cooking techniques in his grandmother's kitchen before going on to train under celebrated Mexican chef Patricia Quintana and work in Michelin-starred restaurants in France. At Nu'u, those influences come together through slow cooking, spice grinding, fresh masa and traditional techniques, with dishes designed to be ordered for the table and shared.
For gluten-free diners, there's an added bonus: the entire kitchen is gluten-free.
That means you won't find a token handful of modified dishes tucked away on a separate menu. Nu'u's tacos are served on hand-pressed corn tortillas made with fresh masa, while its broader menu celebrates ingredients and cooking techniques that naturally lend themselves to gluten-free dining.
The restaurant first introduced weekday lunches in July, including new Mexican Lunch Bowls loaded with rice, refried beans, a choice of protein, house-made guacamole, salsa and vegetables.
Saturday lunch takes a slightly more leisurely turn with Nu'u's Oaxacan Brunch. The five-course shared menu features dishes such as guacamole, tacos, carne asada, potatoes and mushrooms, and Oaxacan flan, with the option to turn it into a bottomless affair with margaritas, Mexican beer and wine.
It's a welcome addition for anyone who has been looking for somewhere to enjoy Mexican food without having to navigate the menu for gluten, and an excellent excuse to make lunch last a little longer.
Nu'u by Nativo is currently open for lunch Friday and Saturday from 12pm at 29 Glebe Point Road, Glebe.
