Australia’s first inHarmony Sound Lounge has arrived on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, bringing a high-tech form of sound therapy already established overseas to Balgowlah.

Now available at pH Clinic, the technology combines low-frequency vibration with immersive audio to create a full-body experience where sound isn’t simply heard, but can also be physically felt.

Known as vibroacoustic therapy, the modality uses tactile transducers to convert low-frequency sound into vibrations that travel through the lounge and into the body.

Guests remain fully clothed and lie back on an ergonomic lounge fitted with four tactile transducers, while concert-quality headphones deliver a corresponding soundscape. The result is an immersive sensory experience, with audio through the headphones and physical vibration travelling beneath you.

While sound has played a role in healing and ceremonial practices across cultures for centuries, modern technology is giving researchers new ways to explore what happens when sound isn’t only heard, but physically delivered through the body.

The emerging research is particularly interesting when it comes to stress and relaxation. A 2024 study measuring brain and cardiovascular activity before and after vibroacoustic stimulation found increased parasympathetic activity (associated with the body’s “rest and digest” response) alongside reduced arousal and increased relaxation. The researchers concluded that vibroacoustic technology showed potential as a tool for stress management, while noting that further research is still needed.

Sleep is another area being explored, in a small randomised study involving 30 people with insomnia, participants who received vibroacoustic stimulation over one month experienced improvements in measured sleep time and insomnia severity, alongside changes in functional connectivity in areas of the brain involved in sleep and other processes.

The technology has already established a following in the US and Canada, with pH Clinic bringing the inHarmony Sound Lounge to Australia for the first time.

The experience doesn’t require active meditation or breathwork. Guests choose a soundscape based on the state or intention they want to focus on, settle onto the lounge under a weighted blanket, put on the headphones and simply listen and feel.

pH Clinic says guests often describe the experience as sitting somewhere between waking and dreaming, with the combination of sound and physical vibration designed to encourage a deeply relaxed state.

The Sound Lounge joins an already extensive line-up of wellness and recovery therapies at the Balgowlah clinic, including infrared sauna, cryotherapy and red light therapy, and can also be added to another treatment on the same day.

There are three experiences to choose from depending on how long you’d like to stay horizontal.

The Journey runs for 25 minutes and costs $49, The Voyage extends the experience to 55 minutes for $79, while the 85-minute Odyssey costs $99. Sound Lounge sessions are also included across pH Clinic’s membership tiers.

Curious to find out what it feels like when sound becomes something you can physically feel?

Bookings for the inHarmony Sound Lounge are now open at pH Clinic, Shop 1, 318 Sydney Road, Balgowlah.
